Georgs Mutter findet einen Brief seines längst verstorbenen Vaters, den dieser an ihn gerichtet hat. Georg war vier Jahre alt, als sein Vater Jan Olav erfuhr, dass er nur noch kurze Zeit zu leben hat. Zu jung, um diese Nachricht zu verstehen und zu bewältigen. Georgs Vater schrieb diesen Brief vor 11 Jahren an seinen Sohn, um ihm ein Vermächtnis in das Erwachsensein mitzugeben. Durch diesen Abschiedsbrief sieht sich Georg mit dem Tod konfrontiert und beginnt, über das Leben nachzudenken. Natürlich ist es ein Abschiedsbrief, vor allem aber erzählt er von der hartnäckigen und auch sehr komischen Suche Jan Olavs nach dem geheimnisvollen Orangenmädchen. Es ist die Geschichte einer großen Liebe und für Georg zunächst eine Reise in die Vergangenheit. Diese wirft jedoch Fragen auf, die auch für Georgs Gegenwart von Bedeutung sind. Wer ist das geheimnisvolle Orangenmädchen? Welche Bedeutung hatte sie damals für den Vater? Wer könnte heute das „Orangenmädchen“ für den Sohn sein. Welche Erfahrungen muss ein Jeder im Leben machen, obwohl die Erfahrungen sich doch zu gleichen scheinen? Wie hält Georg es selbst mit der Liebe und dem Leben? Der Vater kann ihm keine Antwort mehr geben. Aber er konnte die richtigen Fragen stellen.
Wieder einmal geling es Jostein Gaarder die großen Themen der Welt in einfache Worte zu kleiden und damit einem großen Publikum zugänglich zu machen. Das Orangenmädchen, vielleicht Gaarders schönste Liebesgeschichte, ist eine Hommage an das Leben.
Mit großer Sorgfalt, viel Einfühlungsvermögen in die Thematik und auch Humor haben Christian Gundlach und Martin Lingnau diesen Roman für die Bühne eingerichtet. Entstanden ist ein Stück über die Leichtigkeit der Liebe und der Zerbrechlichkeit des Glücks – eine anrührende Geschichte ohne rührselig zu werden.
Erstmalig vereinen sich auf der Altonaer Bühne Literatur und Musik zu einer erfrischend neuen Komposition. Nicht nur wird der Roman für die Bühne adaptiert, sondern bewegt sich genreübergreifend in die Sphären des Musicals. Hier ergeben sich spannende neue Möglichkeiten.
